There seemed to be more research generated on this topic before 1999 than in recent years, but a review of the literature by Simon & Schwartz in the Journal Birth [1999 Dec; 26 (4): pp. 248-54] recommends hypnosis (and therefore guided imagery) for both severe nausea and vomiting (called hyperemesis gravidarum) and for more garden variety morning sickness.

A recent Scandinavian journal article by Agren & Berg (see this week’s Hot Research ) points to massage as a successful distraction from severe nausea in pregnant women.

When I checked in with some of my favorite, holistic OBGYN experts, they also recommended hypnosis. Harise Stein OBGYN uses interactive guided imagery, often involving trips through the GI tract, calming muscles and the like. She reminded me that some complementary medicine practitioners suspect that women with a lot of nausea are more sensitive to toxins in the environment, and throwing up is a way of keeping these from the baby.

Chris Northrup, OBGYN reports that when she was in practice, she had a great deal of success using hypnotherapists with women with severe cases requiring hospitalization. She also recommends ginger.

Ginger is also a favorite of Dr. Barb Levy, OBGYN, who additionally likes to use wrist bands on the inner wrist at key acu-points. She says this is very effective for some, but not at all for others. Eating small amounts every couple of hours also helps; and of course, good, old Saltines are still a favorite.

Researcher Judith Balk MD was so taken with guided imagery as a suitable intervention for HG, that she was all set to launch a study testing our Healthy Pregnancy & Successful Childbirth audio with severely affected pregnant women, when departments got reorganized and it became too difficult to implement. Too bad!

But this is a long way around saying that I do recommend guided imagery for this, (either our General Wellness, Relaxation & Wellness or Healthy Pregnancy & Successful Childbirth), plus ginger, wristbands, massage and Saltines.
