Dear Belleruth,

Are guided imagery techniques less effective for people who are heavily medicated on pharmaceutical drugs, eg for bipolar or depression or PTS conditions? I suffer from combat stress and some family members have serious depression.

Thank you.

Dear Elias,

Although it’s true that some meds can blunt the effectiveness of guided imagery, it will still be a help, especially with regular use and cumulative impact.  It’s not unusual for a person to be able to slowly reduce his or her dosage of meds over time, thanks to the imagery making up some of the difference.  But it’s best to do this in collaboration with your physician, of course, to be on the safe side.

Good luck with this.
