Well, from the looks of things, summer’s over here on Martha’s Vineyard.
The big crowds are gone. The traffic is calm, even down-island. Drivers stop for other cars and for pedestrians in the crosswalk. The year round folks are smiling, counting their earnings and breathing a sigh of relief.
As you can see from this photograph, you can even have a whole beach to yourself.
The temperature has dipped to the 70’s. The air has turned crispy and the sunlight is dazzling in the way only autumn can make it.
But you never know. Indian summer could be just around the corner. There could be a whole new reprise.
But not for me. It’s time to pack up the car and head west, grateful for the beauty and friendship here, but also eager for the challenges and stretches that come with autumn. It’s not so different a feeling from when it was time to go back to school with a fresh, new assignment notebook and a zippered case of new pens and pencils – not to mention, a pair of stiff, new shoes!
Wishing everyone a happy, productive, joy-filled fall.
