Researchers from New York University, Boston University, the Boston VA Hospital and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research examined the effectiveness of psychotherapies for PTSD in military and veteran populations. First-line psychotherapies most often recommended for PTSD consist mainly of "trauma-focused" psychotherapies that involve focusing on details of the trauma or associated cognitive and emotional effects.
The investigators searched PubMed, PsycINFO, and PILOTS for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of individual and group psychotherapies for PTSD in military personnel and veterans, published from January 1980 to March 1, 2015.
They also searched reference lists of articles, selected reviews, and meta-analyses. Of 891 publications initially identified, 36 were included.

We got this query from a Healing Touch practitioner who was doing her due diligence homework on how to best help veterans suffering from posttraumatic stress. She'd come across last year's journal article in Military Medicine. We get this question periodically, so we decided to post it this time.
Hello,
I have recently read an article published in Military Medicine regarding the use of Healing Touch and Health Journeys Healing Trauma meditation.
As I was purchasing the Healing Trauma meditation, I examined the Relaxation and Wellness meditation. Your website states that the Relaxation and Wellness meditation is the first portion of a protocol to be used with PTSD.
I am preparing to work with military personnel experiencing PTSD in the very near future. Would you be willing to share the research or protocol that is referenced online regarding the Relaxation and Wellness meditation and Healing Trauma meditation for PTSD?
Thank you very much for any assistance you may offer.
Warmly,
A.T., Healing Touch practitioner -

Researchers from the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor investigated the feasibility, appeal, and clinical efficacy of an MBCT (mindfulness-based cognitive therapy) group intervention, adapted for combat-related posttraumatic stress, or PTSD, as the VA still calls it.
Consecutive patients seeking treatment for chronic PTSD at a VA outpatient clinic were enrolled in 8-week MBCT groups, modified for posttraumatic stress (four groups, n = 20) or brief treatment-as-usual (TAU) comparison group interventions (three groups, n = 17).
Pre- and post-therapy psychological assessments used the CAPS scale (clinician administered PTSD scale) on all patients. In addition, the MBCT groups filled out , self-report measures (the PTSD diagnostic scale, PDS, and the posttraumatic cognitions inventory, PTCI). -

Researchers from the firm of Collinge & Associates in Eugene, Oregon, reported on pilot data from phase I of a project to develop and evaluate a self-directed program of integrative therapies for National Guard personnel and significant others to support reintegration and resilience after return from Iraq or Afghanistan.
Data was reported on 43 couple pairs. The intervention was an integrated multimedia package of guided meditative, contemplative, and relaxation exercises (on CD), and instruction in simple massage techniques (DVD) to promote stress reduction and interpersonal connectedness.
A repeated measures design with standardized instruments was used to establish stability of baseline levels of relevant mental health domains (day 1, day 30), followed by the intervention and assessments 4 and 8 weeks later. -

I wrote this guided imagery program to create a rich atmosphere of protection and safety, with images that are evocative enough to successfully compete with all the internal brain chatter that keeps us up. Steve Kohn’s music draws mind, body and spirit down into deep, restful sleep.
