Researchers from The Sorbonne in Paris examined the relationship between dispositional mindfulness - peoples' natural tendency toward a mindful attitude (non-judgmental awareness of the present moment), and their weight status, in a large sample of the French adult general population.
A total of 14,400 men and 49,228 women, over 18 yrs old, were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Mindfulness data was collected, using the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire, as well as self-reported weight and height.
The investigators assessed the association between weight status and dispositional mindfulness, as well as its subscales (observing, describing, acting with awareness, non-judging and non-reactivity), using multinomial logistic regression models adjusted for socio-demographic and lifestyle factors.

Researchers from Harvard and McGill Universities performed a systematic review of studies investigating the impact of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) on stress and anxiety in healthy, nonclinical adults.
A total of 29 studies (n=2668) were included. Effect-size estimates suggested that MBSR is moderately effective in pre-post analyses (n=26; Hedge's g=.55; 95% CI [.44, .66], p<.00001) and in between-group analyses (n=18; Hedge's g=.53; 95% CI [.41, .64], p<.00001).
Outcomes were maintained at an average of 19 weeks of follow-up and the results suggest large effects on stress, moderate effects on anxiety, depression, distress, and quality of life, and small effects on burnout.

Researchers from the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada looked at the impact of mindfulness-based cancer recovery (MBCR) training, as well as supportive-expressive group therapy, on telomere length in breast cancer survivors. Telomere length is associated with longevity and has been found to be a predictive element in breast cancer prognosis.
The MBCR focused on training in mindfulness meditation and gentle Hatha yoga, whereas SET focused on emotional expression and group support.
The primary outcome measure was relative telomere length, the telomere/single-copy gene ratio, assessed before and after each intervention. Secondary outcomes were self-reported mood and stress symptoms.

“If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything, it is open to everything. In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's mind there are few. ” ― Shunryu Suzuki, from Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind.
I had a coffee mug with a slogan that read, “Don’t just do something, sit there.” I bought it on my first trip to a Zen center in California, where I learned the phrase, “There are two words that describe Zen-not always so.” That’s where I also learned that meditation is so simple that it’s difficult. You just sit there. How hard it that? The trick is you just sit there. You don’t think, you don’t worry, you don’t mentally complain how stuffy the room is, you don’t fidget, sleep, daydream, chew gum or think about what the monks are making for lunch. -

Right now, while you are reading this, no matter where you are, you can try one or more of these five techniques:
Breathing: Of course you are breathing, but paying attention to how you are breathing is the key to using your breath to relieve stress. When we are tense, we tend to take short, shallow breaths. Rather than trying to force yourself to take a deep breath, try just relaxing the diaphragm and breathing muscles and feel your lungs fill with air. Let your shoulders drop and your belly rise, and hold the breath for as long as it is comfortable before letting it flow out effortlessly. Take a few of these deep, conscious breaths and feel the tension melt away.
Mindfulness: Though mindfulness is a form of meditation, you don’t need to visit an ashram to learn how to do it. Mindfulness can be practiced anywhere and at any time, even while you are working. In fact, practicing mindfulness improves the quality of whatever you are doing, because it involves focusing on the present moment, without allowing your mind to roam and worry about the future or stress over the past. In her response to a question about mindfulness meditation, Belleruth explained that mindfulness meditation is a way of constantly bringing attention to our internal experience, and focusing on things like the sensation of breathing.

Greetings from the frozen Cuyahoga Valley, where March came in like a lion, and according to superstition it should go out like a lamb.
The river and parks here are beautiful in winter, and Cindy’s Huskies love winter and snooze in the snow, but we humans are so ready for spring.
It has been a long, cold winter for most of the country, and for a number of reasons, this extended deep-freeze could contribute to mindless eating for many of us. This makes March a great time to celebrate National Nutrition Month and the perfect time to practice mindful eating.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, It was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness,. . . it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” Charles Dickens wrote those words in 1859, in the beginning chapter of the epoch novel A Tale of Two Cities, but the words could also be used today to describe the cascade of roller-coaster emotions we experience between the ages of 12 and 20.
People in each generation are certain theirs was the generation of young people who experienced the most stress. We have all heard the tales from our grandparents who had to walk a dozen miles in sub-zero temperatures to get to school. Of course as night followed day, they must have had to walk another dozen to get home-unless they walked to their jobs in the mines or fields or factories and then walked a dozen miles home. The truth is that they probably weren’t exaggerating, but we couldn’t commiserate because we could list so many reasons why our generation had it worse.
What we all experienced while coming of age might have been stressful, but lately we at Health Journeys are hearing from so many people who are looking for help for stressed-out teens that we did a little research and found that there seems to be a serious problem with excessive stress among today’s youth. -

All day…every day, we are bombarded by negativity from the press, on television, online and in print. We meet negative people everywhere, and read never-ending, mean comments from internet trolls. How do we rise above it all? How do we manage our anxiety, depressive thoughts and our blood pressure in a world filled with horrible news, bad behavior and pessimistic talk? And how do we create positive, productive days in a world of ‘glass-half-empties’?
When I was a child, my mother would help me come up with my own ‘positive thoughts’, and then have me repeat them to myself quietly. Now (and likely then) we call them ‘affirmations’. It used to aggravate me sometimes, but I’ll be darned if she wasn’t right most of the time – I did feel better after a while.
Fast forward quite a bit to the present time, and I look around my office, where I am lucky to be surrounded by the works of some of the most wonderful authors of affirmations in the world. I’m never surprised when a customer or client tells me (often sheepishly) that they only listen to the affirmation tracks on our audios. There’s sound logic behind this.
