Greetings from Oklahoma City, where, once again, the material from Invisible Heroes is getting a wonderful reception. Nowadays, people here are reeling more from tornadoes than the bombing of 10 years ago, although on Veterans Day there were plenty of anniversary reactions to that horrific event.
The response to the ideas from the book gives me a sense of quiet, solid gratification. It’s not an ego thing. My intention in writing it was to give new avenues and direction to therapists, health providers, counselors, teachers and pastors; and to offer hope and validation to survivors. This seems to be happening. Mission accomplished. (Maybe now I can start that trashy novel my husband was always goading me to write!)
It’s funny, because when you’re writing a long, complex book like this one, you’re basically taking a crazy leap of faith, spending 2-3 years working on something in relative isolation, without a lot of feedback from the outside world. My editor, my agent and my colleagues didn’t see a page of this until it was done. Of course, I was kept going by the 60+ trauma survivors and the nearly as many therapists who were reporting their experiences to me. And the fabulous PILOTS database was a miraculous source of data. So I didn’t ever feel like I was flying blind. Still, it’s good to see that it’s hitting the mark. The letter we got this week that’s posted on our Inspiring Story page says it all.
Now I can start working on some new audios, as soon as I get a little rest. I’ve been on the road too long, and need to get back to working out in my gym, tidying up my house, and taking care of day to day stuff again.. I also have a lot of new resources to review for our catalog. Keep ‘em coming.
