I am 63 years old and for the major part of my life have had a weight problem. Up to the time I was 9 years old the "problem" was perceived - aided by my mom''s beliefs and needs - but after that it became a reality. I have had periods of my life when I was thin and was able to keep the weight of for up to 10 years at a time. But now I am closing in on 300# and am very scared that I will not be able to stop. As I get older, I have less and less energy and fewer of the motivations that worked in the past are of significance now. I am in a real crisis and am reaching out. I have ordered your cd''s an am hoping that they will work. If you have any other suggestions I would be very glad for them.

You have my commiseration and my empathy. It''s hard enough to have a mother who imposed weird body and weight issues on you; then to hit menopause and middle age, when the body encourages you to hold those fat cells near and dear. Then there''s the vicious cycle of fatigue from ingesting too many calories, which breeds a craving for sugar and quick energy, which causes spikes in blood glucose that bring you crashing down again - not exactly great for motivating you to get up and move around a lot more than usual. And add to that the problems people have when their weight gets seriously up there - it messes up the metabolism so that, after losing the first 25 pounds, they tend to plateau out there and get horribly frustrated.

The CDs are a big help, no question - Martha Howard''s, David Illig''s and mine are all different but each quite effective if you listen regularly, once or twice a day to at least one of them. And you should keep listening even if you''re sick to death of them - because they''ll continue to work, even if you hate ''em. But you are smart to be looking for other approaches to use along with them.

I would strongly recommend you read an article by Seth Roberts, a Berkeley professor who experimented with the effects of simple foods like canola oil and fructose water, sleep, standing & sitting, and metabolic set points with great success. It''s got some terrific, simple, do-able suggestions that will make a difference and encourage you to stay the course.
